My Goodness What a Year!

I know that many of you would have given up on me ever returning to the blogging world and I feel terrible for having neglected you for so long....

My world has been rather a whirlwind of late. It may have had something to do with the following arrivals within 14 and a half months:

Yes, I have been rather busy kittens!

I have two beautiful additions to my family - which means that vintage clothing has been hanging, unworn in my wardrobe for some time. Oh, how I've yearned for the waistline to be able to fit into my vintage dresses again.

However, as my latest arrival is only 14 weeks old, you will understand that I am now in possession of some extra curves on my already established ones! But I live in the real world too, so I'm not overly concerned and in the mean time, I've "made do" with this gorgeous number by my new favourite dress maker: Grace of Autumn

So my promise to you is to update more regularly, share my latest handmade, vintage or wonderful new discoveries as I am even more exposed to them now I am officially a Vintage Style Mamma!

Thank you all so much for the lovely well-wishes in relation to my last post! I was pleased to read that you are still interested in how I am going to move through this next exciting stage of my life whilst trying to remain somewhat stylish.

Let me tell you - it's been a bit of a challenge (but more of that later...)!

But first things first darlings. I am happy to report that I am embracing my changing shape and revelling in my newly acquired curves.

Now as every stylish gel knows, the secret to looking great and feeling comfortable is great foundation garments.

Hello Kittens!

Happy New Year. I hope your festive season was full of laughter, love and happiness.

Now I know I've been a very naughty girl by neglecting this blog. I am sorry if you thought I had abandoned you, but, to be honest, there has been quite a lot going on in my world and you all deserve an explanation.

I've been hiding a little secret:

I am going to be a mamma!

At present, I am 18 weeks along. It has been a bit of a bumpy ride as this is not my first pregnancy since my wedding back in May last year, but we are now all happy and healthy and looking forward to a little bundle's arrival in early June of 2010.

So now you understand my lack of outfit posts - nothing in my vintage wardrobe quite fits anymore and alas, it may be a while til I regain some semblance of a waistline! While I have always loved the glamour of vintage, I am finding that this unfortunately didn’t extend to maternity wear styles of yesteryear!

So I put it to you, darlings - what would you like to see here on Vintage Verve in 2010?

I don't want to bore you with baby or pregnancy related things (there are so many other wonderful blogs out there that cover these topics), unless you are interested in how I am going to try and translate my personal style around my ever-expanding.... well..... my ever-expanding everything!!

Spring Racing Advice - Keep Yourself Nice, Kittens

The Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival is in full swing Kittens! I just love this time of year.

If you are lucky enough to be heading to the track this year, I have some advice to help get you through the long days and subsequently long festive nights in tip top shape.

Rule number one Kittens: Nightclub wear is NOT appropriate race wear. Decorum and etiquette go hand in hand. Remember, this is a day time event - try to head more in the feminine, pretty direction, rather than man-eating vamp direction. Less is definitely not more.

2. Colour is your friend. There is nothing wrong with the classic black and white ensemble (after all, B&W is the traditional theme for Derby Day), but this is a great opportunity to to let colours show off your skin tone:

Sigh. I just adore Nicolangela dresses (above).

3. Be prepared! Keep bandaids, Hollywood tape, tampons and aspirin in your purse. Generously offer them to others 'caught short' during the day.

4. Check the weather report well in advance. Don't freeze to death for the sake of fashion and for heaven's sake - wear sunscreen all over lest your shoulders and back end up matching your garish hat/sash/shoes:

(I have nothing nice to say regarding these ensembles, so I shall remain silent...)

5. (and this is a big one) EAT as well as drink. Imbibe H2O as well as the free flowing champagne.

You'll not only feel better the next morning, but you'll also avoid scenes such as the wreck below:

Not a good look Kittens. Not a good look at all.

Finally, rule 6. Think about your shoes. Try not to trial brand new ones that slice through your tender tootsies after an hour's wear. Wedges are ideal for standing on grass and there are many choices available this season. If you cannot get the right colour to match your accessories go for a neutral or nude colour - these will go with everything in your wardrobe and keep you looking nice long after the last race is run and the last train home has pulled away from the station.

The Way We Were - Vintage Magazines

A little while ago, I came across quite a magnificent find: an original copy of The Australian Home Journal from 1954! (click on the images to make them larger)

I just adore real vintage magazines. They are a true snapshot of not only the fashions of the day, but of the societal attitudes and cultural norms - so fascinating!

This one edition contained so many interesting stories, articles and advertisements that I want to share with you, kittens, that I have decided to do a series of posts on the "Way we were" topic.

The magazine was also a reinforcement of the fashion cycle theory - that past era styles come back into fashion every so often and that some are always in vogue (and thus, 'classics').

For example: The shirt dress:

First seen in the 1940's the shirt dress has been a staple fashion classic ever since. Above, we see the 1954 take, including the belted waist and flared skirt, as well as a more tailored look.

Here are two examples of the modern shirt dress, from Spiegels in the US and Dorothy Perkins from the UK.

Spring Trend Alert - It's all below deck...

Now, if you are like me, you are starting to think about this year's Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, and more to the point, studiously observing the latest trends to incorporate into your look.

One thing I have noticed is the emphasis on statement shoes and legs. Observe:

Bright red with polka dots on dark legs and Mary-Janes with bobby socks! I loved that gorgeous petti-skirt in contrasting royal blue too.

Diamante studded wedges with patterned stockings (I am still undecided about the open toes with stockings look - what do you think?)

Another fantastic example of statement pins! I just love these stockings - fishnets with roses!

Let this be a lesson to you Kittens:

Just because you may be down the back and unable to see the lovely fashions at Miss Green's Garden Party for Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, don't think that you won't get noticed....

Much to my chargrin, my efforts to not damage either myself or the chair I was utilising was considered appropriate fodder for The Age's photographer and so this is what greeted me on Tuesday morning as I sipped my coffee:

As a veteran of many a Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, I have always been fastidious in my belief to NEVER remove one's shoes, even if they are like so many red hot knives slicing flesh from bones at the end of the day. Sigh. Trust my luck to be 'papped' when I was only being mindful of the furnishings!

It did send me into a bit of a dither. What does one wear to a races themed garden party?

Always a fan of doing things differently, I decided that blue and green should definitely been seen:

Making New "Classic"

I've had a couple of requests for some more shots of my wedding in May of this year. So if you'll indulge me, I just thought I'd share a couple of my favorites that I thought you'd like.

As I've already explained, we did not have a vintage theme to our day, rather, I chose 'understated elegance' as my guide when making my wedding day related selections.

Black and white photography can really help set the scene and these shots assisted me in producing a 'classic' look, as opposed to a modern one.

These next few are in colour, but again, reflect the look and feel I was trying to achieve, without trying too hard.

I'd like to share my favorite with you.

I have spent an inordinate amount of time looking at vintage clothing online, both here and overseas and every so often you discover a name that you realise is synonymous with quality and style.

One of these is Suzy Perette. Here's a little bit from the Vintage Fashion Guild about this particular brand.

Imagine how excited I was to find one of my own.

I love this dress for so many reasons:

See This - Coco Avant Chanel

Last night, I escaped the wintry Melbourne weather with a trip to the cinema with some fellow bloggers including Fashion Hayley, Super Kawaii Mama and Sea of Ghosts to watch Audrey Tatou's portrayal of fashion icon Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel.

What This Movie Is About:

The movie gave a very in-depth look at the background of Coco before her career in couture in Paris. It charts her rise from tavern-singer to hat maker and the people who influenced her including her sister and various friends and lovers.

What This Movie Isn't About:

The clothes.

This is a story for devotees of Chanel the woman, rather than Chanel, the fashion house.

There was one scene where Chanel clad models drifted down a mirrored staircase like so many pieces of brightly coloured confetti (I literally held my breath during this gorgeous visual feast), but this movie is about Coco the non-conformist.

I still enjoyed this film and thought Tatou's Chanel was executed very well. There were many scenes where Coco had no dialogue, but her thoughts and moods leapt from Audrey Tatou's eyes, carriage and subtle facial expressions.

Non-Vintage (Quell Horror!)

Hello Kittens! It's been a whirlwind of a month for me - first getting married and then jetting off on honeymoon.

But now I am back in Melbourne and settling in to married life (and attempting to get back into work mode....).

I've had a few requests for me to do a post about my wedding as there has been quite a bit of speculation as to what a Vintage Clothing blogger would wear as a bride.

Sorry to disappoint, but I decided not to wear vintage. Now before you run for the smelling salts, let me explain why.

First and foremost, a wedding is about two people coming together to celebrate their marriage. You hear a great deal about how a wedding is "all about the bride" but that is just not true, kittens (and don't let anyone tell you otherwise). The groom is equally as important and I detest the multi-billion dollar industry that breeds the attitude that they are merely an appendage on the big day.

Mr VV supports my vintage obsession with good grace, but it is really my, not his thing, if you understand what I mean and I wanted our wedding day to be about us - not just me.

I chose instead to wear very special heirloom pieces. Or, they will become heirloom pieces now.

My very wonderful and talented Mother Verve (MV) made my gown and my new Mother-in-law made my Cathedral length veil. MV also made the dresses for my brides maids, the flower girl and also made our delicious wedding cake.

If you look closely, you may be able to spot my something blue (that after 6 hours had to be changed lest they cripple me during our dancing).

Having the women in my family hand make my wedding gown and veil make them even more sentimentally valuable to me. All the fittings, discussions and sewing in the lead up to our wedding day were lovely bonding experiences that we will have to share forever.

And who knows.... perhaps one day one of my own children or a niece or even a great niece or grand daughter may want to wear an heirloom dress or veil, that will just so happen to be a carefully stored and pre-loved vintage item.

Channelling Mad Men - The Secretarial Pool

I have firmly caught the Mad Men bug, especially now that it is available on free to air TV in Australia (8.30pm Thursday nights, SBS).
Here is my homage to the secretarial pool:

Black pencil skirt - so old I can't remember where it came from. White polyester (I know... I know...) sheer blouse thrifted from Hunter Gatherer eons ago.

As always the devil (and charm) is in the details. The micro-pleat texture never needs pressing (purfect for this Kitten, who lacks any skill with an iron) and ruffles on each sleeve is mirrored in the high neckline too.

The decorative button and bow detail on the front ties in nicely with the functional buttons down the back.

All I need now is a note pad and pen.... take a letter Miss Verve....

Stop Staring! Ok, You Can Look!

As per my previous post, last Sunday I got together with some wonderful Australian bloggers to meet, share blogging tips and tricks and have just a jolly good afternoon.

I pulled out a dress that I have only worn once to the races a couple of years ago and decided it needed another outing. From the US label Stop Staring Clothing, this dress has a vintage 50's look, with modern fabric and detailing. The bengaline fabric has just the right amount of stretch to be both flattering and supremely comfortable.

I'm only posting this photo because if you look carefully, you'll see a butterfly flitted past just as the shot was taken. Can you see it?

Stop Staring make some really lovely vintage reproduction dresses, which is very handy if you, like me, are not strictly a vintage purist. As I am not a collector of museum pieces, I see nothing wrong with altering a vintage piece to suit or fit me better. Clothing is (IMHO), after all, meant to be worn.

A Very Vintage Wedding

Everyone loves a wedding!

C'mon Kittens - admit it. Every time you see a car hood adorned with ribbon you hope to catch a glimpse of a bride on her big day as the car sails by. You crane your neck when you see a happy couple having their "candid" photos done on the beach or in the park with their various attendants traipsing along behind them, bouquets in hand.

The most interesting thing I find about weddings is the fashion. Of the guests and bridal party alike. Pick up any of the massive bible-thick tomes dedicated to selling the marriage day dream and you will see interesting interpretations of what to wear on "the biggest day of your life" (well for most, it is only the biggest day so far Kittens, remember that...).

What's in vogue now may not be what our grandmothers wore, but ever since Queen Victoria chose a white gown that was specifically intended to only be worn on her wedding day, Western brides around the world have followed suit.

Melbourne = Unromantic? Sydney = Derivative? Prove Him Wrong!

If you are not already following The Sartorialist, please at the very least have a good look. Scott Schuman's blog was named by Time Magazine as one of its "Top 100 Design Influencers" and with good reason. He has an amazing talent for photographing street fashion and finding the core essence of his subjects. I love his images and can find inspiration in just about every one of them.

I was therefor, very excited to see that he is currently in Australia as a guest of The Australian Tourism Board at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week and managed to stop in Melbourne for two days.

In an article published on Tuesday he was asked to compare the women of Melbourne and Sydney (*yawn*)..... Clearly the journalistic agenda of the so called "Melbourne/Sydney rivalry" is alive and well. But I shall leave that subject for another rant.

He said Melbourne women had a "very serious" style preferring "over design" along the lines of Comme Des Garcons and Yohji Yamamoto and flats over heels.

"A lot of times they kind of dummy it down a bit and kind of dowdy it down, which to me I don't find that romantic," he said

"Where here [in Sydney] they work out hard, they are beautiful girls and they really play that up. But somewhere in each place there's that difference. Heels and all that don't always make the look."

Now, I don't mean to get defensive about the town I love, or it's gorgeous Harbour City sister, but exactly how much of Melbourne did he see in two days to qualify 'A lot of times..."? Plus the fact that he was quoted after spending one day at RAFW (making that around two days in gorgeous Sydney) suggests that his view is somewhat skewed.

I got the feeling he was saying that essentially, Australian women just aren't put together very well. Yes, we are beautiful, but we lack true sophistication or self awareness of our style.

This Kitten disagrees. A. Great. Deal.

Indecent Obsession?

Just how many shoes does a fashionista sista need? How many pairs is too many? Is there really such a thing?

Even a girl with a strict budget like myself seems to be able to accumulate a vast array of footwear fashion. At the moment I am aquiring at least two pairs a month. In certain circles I been known as "Shoosie" I'm actually starting to run out of proper storage space for my tootsie covers.

So I thought I'd let you have a peek inside Vintage Verve's shoe closet so you can tell me: is 48 pairs of shoes too many for one vintage kitten?

Every Girl Deserves: Red Shoes

Don't you just love statement shoes? I've posted before on my love of them. Without a doubt, I think that a pair of red shoes has the power to lift, not only your entire ensemble, but your confidence and mood. Red shoes say "I have flair, style AND the confidence to pull them off" plus, I have never, EVER heard a single person say anything negative about any of the four pair I personally own and wear.

I think we all need a few more Dorothy moments in our lives!

The One That Got Away...

Have you ever looked at something a couple of times, gone back and forth, ummed and aaahed, then finally made up your mind to go ahead and buy it, only to find someone has beaten you to it?

While waiting for an answer from an overseas seller on the postage options available, someone else snatched this one away from me.

I even have the shoes to go with it!

To make matters worse, I have a looming deadline for an important event where not only am I a VIP, but the theme is "Vintage Glamour". I almost cried as I kicked myself for not buying it yesterday, when it still could have been mine.

I'm off to lie down and have a Bex. Maybe drown my misery in Champagne. *sniff*

Elegantly Waisted - A Vintage Vixens Secret Weapon

As a curvy girl, I am forever being thwarted from wearing many authentic vintage pieces as I am unfortunately many (sigh...many) inches away from a 26 inch waist. So, I have a secret weapon that I am going to share with you.

Late last year I purchased this little number from What Katie Did:

The "Dorothy" underbust corset has a steel busk (the metal hook and loops at the front) and steel boning sewn into the lining. It pulls tight with strong nylon lacing at the back and can reduce your waist by up to 4 inches. That's right Kittens - 4 INCHES!!

Now since I purchased my corset I have lost a little weight and it a little on the big side now, particularly under the bust, but it is still very wearable under both vintage and modern dresses.

The pink gingham print makes it almost too pretty to hide under clothing, but it has yet to venture out over the top of a crisp white shirt. I always seem to lose my nerve to use it as outerwear!

I just love the way it defines my waist and gives me killer curves a la Joan Holloway.

Vintage Manners - The RSVP

I am in the midst of organising a rather large party, which includes a splendid new frock for myself and a formal dinner for my guests.

For catering, seating and a myriad of other reasons, my hand crafted invitations include RSVP instructions, which led me to think of the proper etiquette of the required response.

Essentially, RSVP is an abbreviation of the French Répondez s'il vous plaît or, in English, literally translated as "Please respond". There are usually detailed instructions accompanying a RSVP request, such as whom you are to contact, how you are to contact them and by what date your response is required.

So, in a world where such etiquette is often confused, forgotten or not taught at all, I have constructed some pointers - just in case you were wondering Kittens!There are a myriad of books and online resources regarding etiquette, but it boils down to only three main points:

General rules are as follows:

1. You should respond within 24 hours of receiving the invitation with either the names of those attending* or indicate an inability to attend.

*It should be noted that if only one name appears on your personalised invitation, then you are to assume that the invitation is not extended to others.

2. Respond in writing if possible, or via the same method the invitation was extended. To be most proper, a hand-written response is the best way to RSVP. However, if an invitation was sent via email, an email RSVP is appropriate.

3. Respond even if you are unable to make it. You don't need to go into details and there are many ways to politely decline an invitation that won't embarrass you or your host.

Example:

Dear Host,

Thank you for your kind invitation to attend (insert event name here) on (insert event date, venue and time here).

Unfortunately I am unable to attend, but know that your party/dinner/wedding/school fete will be a wonderful/successful/memorable event.

Urban Hyms - Melbourne Laneways at Night

On Friday night, I joined some friends and headed into the city to enjoy a Vodka lime and soda (or three)at a style of establishment Melbourne is famous for: the Lane way Bar.

Although Melbourne is neatly set out in a very handy grid formation, this is embellished with a network of lane ways that interconnect, criss cross, lead off each other and sometimes just have a dead end.

We decided to head to The Croft Institute, located on Croft Alley. Finding it and getting there is half the fun, as you head away from the well lit main drag, down dark cobblestone paved lane ways, the walls festooned with spray paint and stencil art that cut through the gloom:

Just when you think you've made a wrong turn (as you pass rubbish laden skips and the back doors of restaurant kitchens), you see a dimly lit sign, high above a doorway, at the back of a dead end:

It's the sort of place you find when you are with someone has been before. Which makes it perfect for an uncrowded lounge around with drink in hand. While the decor is a little spooky (look out for the chemistry sets and strange beakers on display), the booths are comfortable and the staff quick to dispense your chosen poison.

Verdict? Great spot (once you can find it) to spend a quintessential Melbourne Friday night.

Dragon Fly

I've always loved Dragonflies. There is something inherently pretty about their long slender wings as they dance across water, almost skimming the surface.

Popular in Art Deco era motifs, these elegant insects were often used as jewelry inspirations. While these are obviously a more modern interpretation, I always receive so many delightful comments when I wear these earrings:

Today, I've teamed them with a cross over top in my favorite colour (red of course!), that features beading at the neckline and 1940's style cap sleeves:

I've also gone the bright red lipstick route with a fabulous indelible Cover Girl product called Outlast. It comes with two applicants: one for the colour (which you apply once) and then a moisturising gloss that you reapply during the day as needed. It is so stay fast that I literally have to take it off with baby oil at the end of the day!

I've always wanted a nice red Cheongsam top, partly inspired by Catherine Martin's costume for Nicole Kidman in 'Australia' and particularly as I am in the midst of planning an Asian holiday.

Today, I wore it work. Sometimes you've just got to mix it up a bit - I sometimes struggle to emerge from what I like to call "Festive Melbourne Black", favoured by many of my fellow Melbournians, particularly in the work place.

I love the Mandarin collar, bright red brocade with gold thread and the lovely fastening details that cascade from the neckline across the shoulder.

Not exactly traditional office wear, but I've actually had lots of positive comments today, which always emboldens me to snap out of my work-wear funk a little more often.

Vintage Touches For The Modern Girl

When you change handbags, what are (apart from the obvious keys, wallet, and phone) the things that you always transfer from clutch to pocketbook to purse to satchel?

For me, a note pad and pen are essential items to tote, as I never know when inspiration will strike. Unfortunately, size constraints often dictates the practicality of such tools.

Recently I have found some delightful vintage-inspired small note books, that at 7.5cm by 10.5cm, are ideal to pop into my bag each day:

The Art-deco inspired peacock and gilt notepad is from my local newsagent (paper shop) and continuing with my current couture obsession, the New Look illustrated ones were purchased from the Bendigo Art Gallery during my trip to visit the Golden Age of Couture exhibition.

Oh my goodness, I think I may have to have a lie down!

The reason for my somewhat over-excited state is re-visiting all the gorgeous photos from the "Golden Age of Couture" Exhibition I recently visited in Bendigo with the delightful Nicole from Circa Vintage Clothing.

Once again, I urge you to visit this exhibition if you have the opportunity. I am based in Melbourne and it was worth every minute of the entire 4 hour round trip drive just to see it.

Dress and petticoat by Pierre Balmain: Perfect for a 50's retro bride don't you agree?

We saw this stunning, silk rose-print Pierre Balmain dress, sans black bow. Spectacular!

This above is the famous Christian Dior "Zemire". The V&A acquired this ensemble in 2006. It had been stored in a cellar by the Seine in Paris and had to be cleaned and repaired before it could be displayed.

This hand-beaded organza gown by Hubert de Givenchy was awe-inspiring in its detail.

But this was the gown that took my breath away:

This red silk evening dress by Cristobal Balenciaga is beyond divine. Quite plain and simple at the front, it is the covered button, bustled skirt and bow detail at the back that makes this gown the belle amongst a large collection of BEAUTIFUL ballgowns.

Sunday Road Trip

On Sunday a girlfriend and I took a road trip from Melbourne to Bendigo and met up with the lovely Nicole from Circa Vintage on the steps of the Bendigo Museum, temporarily the home of "The Golden Age of Couture" exhibition which is on loan from The V&A Museum in London.

Let me just say, the four hour round trip to get there and was well worth the effort and I urge anyone who has the opportunity to do so. It finishes on the 22nd of March 2009. I will do another post exclusively on the exhibition, as I was so privileged to have Nicole - a true expert give her fascinating and valuable insights into the incredible pieces we saw and I'd love to show some of them to you.

In honour of the New Look, as pioneered by Christian Dior I wore the following dress (remember to click on my images for a closer look):

I have a crinoline underneath to give it pouf and swing when I walk, so it's a lot of fun to wear. I got lots of lovely comments from others visiting the exhibition.

Cute bow detail on the detachable modesty panel at the front. The panel is fastened with press-studs at the shoulders and base.

The nice, wide collar wraps around the back and meets low at the front at the large button.

I always had assumed this dress to be a home-made 50's confection, but the eagle eyed Nicole spotted the union tag, hidden away in a side seam near the dress hem. After a little Googling, I now know it is a professionally made dress from around 1955-56. Happy Days!

People Need Our Help

I was going to do a post about the lovely day I had.

But after viewing the news reports about the devastating bush fires that swept Victoria yesterday I can't bring myself to discuss my insignificant little life when so many have lost not only everything they own, but in many tragic cases, those they loved.

If you are able, I urge you to donate to the Australian Red Cross to assist giving families back some basic supplies so they can continue living in the short term, and consider the massive task of re-building their lives.

Battle of the Hepburns

Insofar as "Style Icon" goes, I believe Audrey Hepburn makes just about every vintage lover's list, after all what's not to love about the muse of Hubert de Givenchy:

And although she is definitely on my list too, it's the other Hepburn that I admire more, Katharine:

Not only was she beautiful in the classic way, her sense of style was somewhat groundbreaking.

She favoured pant-suits, which was considered at the time a wholly masculine trait, not really considered suitable for a glamorous Hollywood Star:

However it's her great talent and attitude that gives her such high esteem in my eyes.

Although her career featured many ups and downs, she was nominated 12 times (a record that still stands today) and won 4 Oscars. Importantly she took control of her own career in a time where Hollywood Studios were all-powerfull and controlling of most aspects of their contracted stars lives.

She was once in an interveiw asked by Barbara Walters if she would have had a career today combined with marriage and children as she forgoed the latter two.

Katharine replied: "You couldn't when I started. At least you couldn't have a marriage that would please me. I have not lived as a woman, I have lived as a man."

When Walters pressed her further she explained "Well, I've just done what I damn well wanted to, and I made enough money to support myself."

Style, grace and attitude. An awesome combination in a role model don't you think?

You Look So Good... Clare Bowditch

I've had this song in my head for about four days now.

I'm a bit of a fan of Australian artists and Clare Bowditch has a high rotation on my iPod.

I not only love her whole vintage shop-girl look (including gorgeous hair that I'm sure is inspired by Super Kawaii Mama), but I love, love LOVE what the guys are wearing in this clip too. Sigh... If only I could get Mr Verve to see things my way!

Essentially, I have to:

This is the image I found:

As it so happens, this folder is the backup of my phone photos. This shot was taken at The Big Day Out in January 2008 where Mr Verve and myself were taking in the sights and sounds of Adelaide boys, The Hilltop Hoods.

I remember it was a stinking hot day and there was little or no shade available at the Flemington Racecourse where I believe they are hosting the same event this year. Even the hoses they were using on the crowd didn't offer much relief (to say nothing of messing up my hair!). If I could use a single term to describe the environment it would be 'dust bowl'.

However, the music was fantastic with headliners, Rage Against The Machine, delivering an amazing performance that I will never forget. It was scary (I barely escaped the mosh pit without injury) and thrilling and made me feel great to be alive. You just had to be there.

So there you go. You just learned something about me: I have very eclectic musical tastes!

Sunny Sunday

There are lots of classic designers of beautiful vintage clothing but there are a couple that I just love. One of those is Alfred Shaheen of Hawaii. Shaheen was famous for his stunning prints that were all made in his self built Oahu printing workshop and his designs of men's and woman's clothing were made by seamstress trained by his mother. From humble beginnings, Alfred became one of the most creative and prolific manufacturers in the post WW2 fashion boom.

Some of you may know of the gorgeous eBay store, Whirling Turban who base many of their reproduction styles on his designs from the 50's & 60's.

When I first saw this dress I knew I had to have it. The halter neck that buttons at the neck with three self covered buttons. The low back, the wrap around tie at the waist, the beautiful rose print (with famous "Shaheen" signature) and maxi style skirt it screamed "love me all summer long". I jumped at the chance to snap it up. Ok, so it was a little on the small side, but lately this Vintage Vixen has been a very good kitty kat and as a result it fits now (cue applause please).

I've tried to capture the low back that is attached to the belt that wraps around to the front:

I was so excited to see that it came with rare matching shawl, so rare that these two high quality pieces have not only survived beautifully, but have not been separated.

Another Discovery

The St Kilda Night Market is back, as featured in my previous post in December.

While perusing the stalls I was stopped dead in my tracks by this:

Although the dress was a squillion sizes too small for this Vintage Vixen, I couldn't help notice the racks of gorgeous vintage men's and ladies clothing accompanying it either side:

The stall was being run by Melbourne costumier Amanda Fairbanks. Amanda sources vintage pieces for theatre, film and television and has created costumes for circus and stage performers here and around the world.

The exciting thing is that Amanda is on the cusp of launching her own online vintage clothing store, so those of you not fortunate enough to be based here in Melbourne can access her wares. She even has a hire service (for those fabulous pieces she cannot bear to let go) for those who are local. I'll let you know when it's all up and running!

Tea For Two

Happy New Year Kittens!

Sorry it's been a while since I posted. I have been rather caught up with Christmas, holidays and celebrations (but more of that later) !

And, wouldn't you know it.... as soon as I return to the office, brilliant sunshine streams down a lovely 29 degrees! I suspect that many are still on holidays, judging by the lack of traffic and the quietness of my phone, not that I'm complaining!

But I digress.... the gorgeous Melbourne summer has arrived and so it's time to break out the comfortable cotton Tea Dress:

I've been told that bold prints are de rigueur at the moment and I love the 50's style of this Vintage reproduction dress that I found at Velour in St Kilda (where the delightful Trish Hunter Finds works).

The cross over sweetheart neckline, the pleats in the full skirt and wide waist band make it comfortable and very easy to dress either up or down:

Fun In The Sun

I made a lovely discovery at the St Kilda Night Market, which will be back in action in the new year: Perfect Parasols.

I think they are positively the loveliest way to stylishly shade yourself from the sun's burning rays. Don't you agree? Although I must admit to enjoying a good dose of vitamin D every now and then, there is nothing worse than being unable to find sufficient shade when out and about.

These parasols were available many different designs and colours and could be that perfect summer accessory for the vintage enthusiast.

St Kilda Sights & Sounds

Last Thursday night I headed out to the St Kilda Beach Night Market, held in the O'Connell Gardens in the shadow of Luna Park's roller coaster:

I managed to get a couple of quick shots of blue sky before the clouds and rain set in (again).

The night market is held on Thursday evenings from 5 -10pm. There is a break over Christmas so the next one is on the 8th of January 2009. If you are in Melbourne, I highly recommend it.

There are loads of stalls selling home made and vintage goods. The food stalls are unbelievable, trading in everything from Paella, organic felafel and veggie burgers right through to Argentinean BBQ! Delish!

There were a couple of vendors of major interest for vintage lovers, but I'll leave them for another post.

I didn't come away empty handed, I couldn't resist snapping a pair of these gorgeous little ruffled bloomers for my brand new niece, Emme, who was born last Tuesday:

Blooming Romance

As discussed before on this post, I was looking forward to seeing Baz Lurhmann's epic Australia. I don't care what anyone says. I don't care if you are a critic, I don't care if you think that Nicole Kidman is woeful or otherwise. I sat through the whole 165 minutes glued to that screen. I laughed. I cried. I loved it.

I wanted Lady Sarah Ashley's wardrobe and to pash Hugh Jackman:

Oh Hugh...kiss me you fool!

Sigh.... Where was I? Yes, the movie and it's costumes. I am now obsessed with gardenias. So I had a custom clip made by this lovely eBay Lady

It's very rockabilly, which isn't usually strictly my style, but sometimes you have to branch out of your comfort zone and widen your horizons, don't you think? Besides, casual Friday on my last day in the office for the year is the perfect opportunity to try it out!

Cheap Frills

Tonight after work, I am heading into the city to meet some friends for a cocktail and dinner at fabulous Asian restaurant Seamstress. I needed something dressy enough for dinner and smart enough for work so I ended up combining both new and old pieces of my wardrobe:

The jacket you might recognise from my previous post here and the skirt is an old one from Portmans. I love the skirt for it's cute knife pleats that line the hem all the way around. The ruffle flicks out as I walk:

Finally, I've added an old scarf knotted at the neck to add a little flair. I hope it doesn't scream "trolley dolly" too much, what do you think?

Naturally, because I live in Melbourne, I have matching red pashmina and a black three quarter sleeved jacket to keep back the after-dark chill. Oh my! What has happened to our Australian summer?

Here is the dress I discovered at the Poppet Christmas drinks last week:

The floaty chiffon has a lovely swish to it and moves so nicely when you walk.

Jet black with diamante details on the shoulder, I added my own patent leather skinny belt and matching wedges. I think it says "sophisticated cocktail hour".

Unhappy with the light yesterday afternoon, I attempted to find a better spot for some photos. Unfortunately the Puppycat insisted on having her head in every shot and I soon gave up trying to fix things:

Bernie Dexter.

Bernie Dexter is one of my style icons. She is the epitome of the modern rockabilly and has modeled extensively for many reproduction vintage clothing lines including What Katie Did, Whirling Turban, Stop Staring and Babygirl Boutique.

A former make-up artist with MAC cosmetics, she one day found herself in front of the camera rather than behind the scenes. She entered into the Viva Las Vegas (VLV) Pin-Up competition and the rest, as they say, is history.

Known for her modern pin-up girl look, Bernie has been compared to 50's wild child Bettie Page whom passed away last weekend:

The similarity is spooky don't you think?

Bernie has taken her popular image and in partnership with other designers has developed her own signature lines of lingerie, shoes and furs across the US and Europe.

I love her bad-girl glamour - those pouty red lips, smokey eyes and the glossiest hair I have ever seen! Now if only I could get even close to her 32-24-35 measurements! Hmmm. That would mean no more chocolate or Champagne. NOT going to happen!

Nifty Thrifty

When browsing at the Camberwell Market on the weekend, I spied a cute little red linen cropped jacket hanging in a stall. Its vibrant colour caught my eye and I thought it would go well with a camisole, jeans and red heels:

It nips in at the waist and is almost like a vest with capped sleeves. Best of all, it fit me perfectly! $12? Who could say no???? Certainly not me!

Then, as I was about make off with my newly found treasure, I spied something else in a similar hue of red, with some embroidered coconut palms:

I unfolded what I thought was part of vintage table cloth to find out it was, in fact, a great 70's wrap skirt. With the help of two very enthusiastic stall holders, I got wrapped and tucked and tied into it. Wouldn't you know it, jacket and skirt looked like they'd been made for each other:

The stall holder had never put the two together, but once she saw them both on me she knocked 50% off the skirt. Happy days! So it looks like I have a new 50's looking outfit for the office Christmas dinner this Friday night for the princely sum of $27.

I just love hunting for a bargain!

Giving All You Can Give

I adore Christmas. I put it down to the wonderful childhood memories I have of this time of year.

The smell of pine needles indoors, big family get togethers, excited children, long lunches and longer dinners. Delicious food everywhere. What's not to love?

Waking up on Christmas morning to see all the lovingly wrapped gifts under the tree was always a highlight as a child. Giving and receiving presents is, lets face it a whole lot of fun.

But now that I'm all grown up, my take on Christmas is slightly different.

While not wealthy by any stretch, I am comfortable. I have a roof over my head and cupboards of food. I have a close, loving family and a wonderful group of friends. I don't want for anything in my life. I don't need more stuff.

So while giving and receiving gifts is still part of my treasured Christmas routine, I no long buy lavish gifts. This year each member of my family will receive a small, inexpensive gift plus a donated gift, in their name, from one of these charities:

School Supplies for a Child from ADRA Australia ($11.00)
A chicken or goat from World Vision Australia Smiles ($6 & $39 respectively)
Gift of Sight Card from Fred Hollows Foundation (min $25)
A toy for a hospitalised child from Starlight Children's Foundation (from $15.50)

So, I'm just putting this out there. I'm not a perfect person by any means, but I do know how truly lucky I am and this is just my small way of sharing the Christmas love.

I had a bit of an adventure yesterday, as I explored the Camberwell Market in advance of hosting a stall there next weekend.

While I was there I picked up some rather excellent bargains, including some that shall be dutifully wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree for others. Yay. Don't you just love giving presents? Watching someone open gifts from me is actually my favourite part of the whole Christmas experience.

Retro Friday

Like many corporate offices, mine embraces the "Casual Friday" tradition.

There's nothing quite like rocking up to work in jeans and an old t-shirt. But casual shouldn't mean sloppy!

My special touch was this merle grey bonds t-shirt that I decorated myself with a fab retro iron on transfer from the 70's:

While I'm not exactly a Bulldogs fan (I'm actually a Tigers girl), I love the glitter outline, the slick print and the fact I took something new and gave it it's own retro look.

It just goes to show, even if you think you're not creative, there are a myriad of ways to incorporate your own personal style into what you wear. Sew old buttons onto fingerless mittens and jacket lapels, take that costume jewelery piece and turn it into your own custom brooch for your jeans, berets, scarves headbands. Tie that neckerchief around your belt loop or hair bun. There is no limit to your imagination - give it a try!

And The Winner Is...

Thanks to all those who left me their fashion disaster stories over the last couple of days in response to this post.

As promised, I chose what I thought was the best fashion disaster story. You know what? It was a difficult choice!

There were some of you who wrote about the outfits you are now embarrassed about, but I don't think these were disasters. They were expressions of your influences and those of the times and should therefore be embraced - you were at the forefront of fashion at the time!

Although honourable mention must go to Cat of Impossible Colour, I have awarded Rosey my cute hoop earrings with heart, squiggles and pink details for her true fashion disaster, from which she recovered with true fashionista aplomb:

"When something so wrong becomes so right....

All I knew for sure was the color; I wanted to wear something soft lemon to a x-mas party a couple of years ago. I envisaged a dress; gorgeous, flowing, sexy and a bit quirky, so I raided my cupboard in search of something to work with....(rather something that my miracle-worker dress maker could work with) I came across a fabulous vintage - lemon color - nightie(!) from the 50's that I had bought at Hunters and Gatherers years before.

I took it to my dress maker and asked for an ethereal, flowy yet sexy design and sketched it with lots of arm movements to support my vision. I bought some really good quality silk for the lining and she dutifully worked her magic.

A week later I went back for a fitting and I've got to tell you, I was disappointed. As I took it off in the dressing room I noticed that the lining material and stitching was so immaculate - the inside was perfect!!
I put on the dress inside out and it was STUNNING! In her 30 years as a dress-maker she had never made a dress perfect by turning it inside out! It was a one of a kind dress that stole the show on the night! Moral of the story - yes, buy that fabulous quirky piece, have a good dress maker and always spend money on good quality lining!! "

It's All In The Details.

I shrugged on one of my vintage cardigans to brighten up my outfit today.

It's one of the reasons why I adore vintage clothing. It's all in the details. Soft lambswool, hand stitched lining and thousands of tiny beading over the front, collar, cuffs and waist band, without the 'bedazzler' look. They certainly don't make them like they used to.

And then.... I broke a g*d@mn nail.

Could this day get any worse?

Well, as it just so happened, no it didn't. In fact, it got a whole lots better.

In the mail a little package was waiting for me, some darling earrings from Lady Melbourne's Vintage Emporium - Hooray!

There were two pairs, one red (which I put on straight away) and one white.

And it got me thinking. This a little package in the mail lifted my spirits and made me smile.

So I thought I'd share the love with you, my dear reader.

Things That Make You Go Arrrgh!

Sigh. Today is one of those days.

You know the one: you over-sleep, forget your lunch, the traffic is a nightmare and the boom gates to the parking are not working.

You end up running late for your first meeting of the day and then someone points out this:

ARRRRRRG! How did I not notice this? While I understand that it is not the end of the world and more of an annoyance, it took away from my black skirt with the cute pleats at the back:

"Dry you eyes, Princess" I told myself sternly. After all, it isn't the most embarrassing fashion misfortune to befall you. That award is strictly reserved for the time I wore a cute LBD I bought in Italy to an awards dinner that should have been accompanied by Hollywood tape to keep "the girls" contained..... but that's another story!

I had the most divine afternoon on Saturday, spending a few hours with some of Melbourne's premier female fashion bloggers.

We shared stories, laughter, ideas and our experiences regarding blogging and how to keep things interesting!

The unpredictable Melbourne weather had me in a spin as I flitted between a lovely light cotton tea-dress or a warmer, high waisted skirt and jacket. In the end, the warmer outfit won and in true Melbourne fashion, on arrival at our stylish venue (complete with faux grass and waiters in tennis gear) the clouds gave way to brilliant sunshine. Oh well. My tea dress will keep for another sunny day!

Viva Bris-Vegas!

I had the pleasure and privilege to be hosted by the lovely people of Brisbane Marketing on a two day whirlwind tour of the city for those in the events and marketing industry.

And so I entertained the dilemma of every style conscious girl when taking a short trip - what do I pack?

As I really only wished to take that which would facilitate the need for carry-on luggage only, I went out and found my version of the over-night bag (click to enlarge):

This over-sized Jag handbag is 48 cm long, 20cm wide and 20cm deep. Perfect size to fit:

One change of underwear, one floral print jersey maxi-dress (for dinner) a black & white cotton skirt, one pair of flat sandals, black short cardigan, light 3/4 sleeved top, one bikini (you never know....) and of course room enough for the essential beauty kit.

I can't tell you how proud of myself I was. Usually I am a chronic over-packer and always end up stuffing at least two full outfits that I never end up wearing (to say nothing of the shoes I take "just in case").

By limiting the size of my case, I forced myself to be economical with my travel wardrobe, which in turn allowed me to breeze straight from the aircraft and into the cars that whisked me off to my destinations. No more luggage carousel angst for this black duck!

And let me tell you, even in the aftermath of the recent storms, Brisbane is a wonderful and beautiful Australian city, full of life, fantastic food, wine, architecture and culture. I cannot wait to return to fully immerse my self at GOMA and spend more time exploring this lovely city.

Gone A Bit Dotty

I have found that over the years I have avoided polka dots.

Sure, they can be cute in small amounts, but I don't think I've ever had the confidence to choose the right piece that would last more than half a season. They tend to be one of those flash trends that only last a couple of months and then they are... well... dated.

I broke my own rules with this skirt, thanks to a couple (or three) glasses of Champagne and eBay.

What hooked me in were the massive white button detail on the back of it (remember, you can click on the pics to enlarge them).

Teamed with a black turtleneck and skinny belt, I hoped to move the outfit away from the cutesy to something a little more sophisimacated for work.

Wedged In

What a weekend the people of Melbourne have just had! I had all sorts of grand plans to bring you pictures of my adventures in the CBD on Saturday (cute lane ways, shops in mosaic and cobblestoned malls), but alas the wind, rain and hail conspired against me :( Maybe another time. I did manage to go to The Way We Wear vintage clothing fair on Sunday afternoon, but the gorgeous Super Kawaii Mamma has described it much better than I ever could, so read all about it here.

Today is a lesson in comfort and style. I give you:

The Wedge:

The main benefit of this style of shoe is the extra height it bestows upon the wearer, without much of the associated pain directed into the ball of the foot. If the shoe is a true wedge - where the whole sole touches the ground from heal to toe tip, the wearer's weight is shared across the length of the foot rather than focusing it on the ball. Ouchy!

The best thing about this style of heel, is the range of styles it comes in!

Right through to ones you can wear to smarten up a more conservative outfit:

I have at least five pairs of wedges in my wardrobe as they are just sooo comfy and even though I am a reasonably tall girl (around 5ft 10") I just love to wear heels where ever I can! These allow me to stand for longer than when wearing traditional high heeled shoes.

Although not strictly within the bounds of fashion etiquette (Shhh, lest I be scolded by Lady Melbourne) as I am wearing patent leather before 5pm, my Midas wedges pictured above are my new favorite way to show off my pedicure. I think even LM would approve.

National Velvet

On Tuesday Night Mr TMS and I joined his parents and their friends for a nice casual dinner at Lau's Family Kitchen in St Kilda for their 8pm seating. If you have an opportunity to dine there, I recommend the Patagonian Toothfish - Mmmm delish!

Now even though I wear mostly dresses and skirts, I also happen to be a fan of jeans. I believe they can be incorporated into a look that says casually classy and can be as feminine as you want to be. You just need to team them with a key piece and the right accessories.

I've already established my love of wearing pearls, so I won't bore you with that again, but my particular statement piece for this outfit is the black velvet blazer:

I teamed it with a lace top and some red high heels (all girls should own at LEAST one pair of red shoes) and embellished the blazer with a vintage brooch that I constantly swap onto just about everything black that I wear.

Mirka Mora

Mirka was born in Paris in 1928 and immigrated with her husband Georges to Melbourne, Australia in 1951.

Her early training was in mime and drama at the Ecole Jean-Louis Barrault, but she had already begun to focus on painting by the time she reached Australia. She and Georges were instrumental in the re-establishment of the Contemporary Art Society in Melbourne from 1953, with their apartment on Collins Street being the meeting place and gallery for the CAS in the early years.

In my opinion, she has been one of the key drivers of what has come to define Melbourne as an Australian City. Her influence on Australian Art and Melbourne culture has cannot be understated.

She was a colleague, mentor, muse and friend of artists including Arthur Boyd, John Perceval, Joy Hester, Charles Blackman, Laurence Hope and Dawn and Ian Sime and John and Sunday Reed. The Reeds founded the Heide Museum of Modern Art located in the then outskirts of Melbourne in Bulleen.

Georges and Mirka were largely responsible in bringing sophisticated European dining to 1950s Melbourne, opening the Mirka Café in Exhibition Street in 1954, then the Balzac in East Melbourne in 1958 (the first Melbourne restaurant to receive a 10pm liquor licence) and finally Tolarno in St Kilda in 1965. In the photo of Mirka Cafe above, you can see Mirka in the centre of the shot, her hand on her face with Georges crouching down.

They were the originators of the true bohemian and artistic flavour of St Kilda, with the heart based at Hotel Tolarno.

Guy Grossi, one of Melbourne's premier Chefs opened his homage to her at the newly refurbished Tolano Hotel in 2007 naming his restaurant after her: Mirka

Mirka Restaurant is a living, breathing canvas-in-progress of Mirka's work, with her whimsical and instantly recognisable friezes and murals decorating the walls of the Fitzroy St eatery:

The food is wonderful, the service sublime. I highly recommend a intimate dinner here with those you love.

In a wonderful interview with Andrew Denton in 2007, she discussed her life, her loves and her philosophy. In a moving moment she told the tale of how she managed to escape the Holocaust and endeared the audience with her explanation of some of her more outrageous public behaviour:

"I don’t like to follow order. And the director of the tapestry workshop, with all due respect to her, had told me what to do when my turn would be to pull the curtain... And when my turn came I said, "I can’t just pull the curtain like all the other people. I have to do something funny." So I organised myself to drop my pants..."

To know about her is to be delighted by her.

Taking it to the Max

There is one particular style that seems to be in all the stores at the moment, I for one am loving it:

The Maxi Dress.

It's good news for the bigger Vintage Vixens amongst us as there are lots of different styles in stretchy jersey that hug your curves in all the right places and natural cotton/linen to keep you cool during the glorious spring weather Melbourne is having at the moment.

The best thing about this style is that you can either dress it up or down with your accessories. As this dress is strapless, I chose to bling it up a little with a chunky necklace, brown belt and bronze flat sandals. The messy 'up do' was inspired in part by the Grecian goddess look. I might need to work on that one a bit methinks!

Day Time Sequins?

Now, I'm not too sure if I've made a fashion faux pas. Today I wore sequins to the office:

I do believe I got away with it as they weren't the bright shinny bling type of sequins and hopefully the simple tunic they are attached to looks a million miles away from being a victim of a "Bedazzler".

It has a pretty Mandarin collar that dips down into a modest open v neckline, which I find perfect for showing off a nice piece of jewelery.

My shoes have some floral details to give them a feminine flourish (not that I've seen many heels with a masculine one...) but best of all, their soft pink tone puts them into the 'neutral' category which means they can pretty much be worn with any outfit one chooses to sling on in the morning.

So what do you think? Should one avoid sequins during daylight hours? Perhaps you are a Magpie like me who just loves bright and shiny things and says "to hell with convention - I like it and I'm gonna wear it!"

Clutching At Straws

I was recently in the market for a new clutch purse to complete my "40's Glamour' outfit for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

I needed to replace the leeetil satin one that I had been using up to that point with one that was large enough to fit all the necessary accouterments that every lady needs:

And then I found one:

This cutie actually has a hard outer shell, so it protects all your girly must-haves and closes with a magnetic clasp.

I was rather pleased with my find!

The lining of the bag was a lovely combination of black and white striped and polka dot material. The inside also contained a secure zipper compartment as well as a little pocket for your phone and another for your tickets.

The black raffia clutch has sensuous curves that make it so comfortable to hold (or you can use the sweet chain link strap that comes tucked inside)

Skirting The Issue

What's a girl to do when faced with a sudden heat wave?

Melbourne was a sweltering 33 degrees celcius on Wednesday so a taste of Summer was certainly sampled.

I decided to dress for comfort for the office in clean, crisp black and white.

Cool cotton blend is the way to go and I love how this skirt sits. It has a bit of strench (which is always handy for the larger vixens amongst us) and has interesting detailing including piping down the front. The paisley print avoids looking like bad 70's wallpaper by remaining monchrome.

Faux pearls dress up the plain sleeveless top for work and my simple black shoes have very cute little bows in contrasting white. Apologies for the shoe shot, I'm not too sure how to turn it around for easier viewing and I wouldn't want anyone to get a crick in the neck on account of me!

Horses? What Horses?

One of the most fabulous things about Melbourne in November is of course the Spring Racing Carnival.

The shops are brimming with lots of soft, feminine dresses, hats, fascinators of all shapes sizes and colours, to say nothing of the multitudes of matching shoes and handbags.

I have been the lucky guest at racetrack car parks and marquees over many seasons and they keep telling me there are actually horses there somewhere. I don't believe them though.... Too many pretty things on two legs to look at!

Now as a seasoned race-goer, I must admit that I have also seen the very worst of the worst over the years in terms of what some young ladies consider as appropriate race wear. In many instances I have wanted to grab some poor unsuspecting girl , shake her by the shoulders and shout "nightclub wear is NOT race ware!!" But I digress...

My theme for this year's Carnival was "40's Glamour"

Secretary's Day Out

While I am not exactly a secretary by profession, I so love the secretary blouse. There is something eminently genteel about heels, a pencil skirt and blouse with ruffles. Don't you think?

I also happen to be a great fan of pearls. I've discovered over the years that you are either a pearl girl or not. Thankfully I fall in the former category. These small fresh water drop earrings were a gift from my lovely sister as part of my bride-slave outfit for her wedding years ago and I still wear them all the time.

This little pink number has three quarter sleeves and the most divine ruffle down the front. The ruffle is in two parts, a bit like a tie, with one straight part that you cross over the front of the neckline and folds into a loop at the side (see second picture above).

I found it through eBay via an American seller.

My shoes are from the current range at Wittner called "Lady" and feature a closed toe with ankle strap. The heels are quite tall at 10cm, so I won't be running for the tram in them (not very lady like any way!), but I find them comfortable enough to sit at my desk and move around the office at work.

Now, it has occurred to me that I am not particularly gifted in terms of wit, charm or wisdom. I wouldn't suppose that anyone might find me as fascinating as the next girl. However, one does get asked by friends and acquaintances on a regular basis for the sources and inspirations for my, shall we say...eclectic style.

I am always drawn by the romance of yester-year, particularly the first half of the 20th Century. I love to search out treasures, with my favourite hunting ground generally being eBay and the fab little Op Shops found in and around Melbourne.

So, dear reader, I promise to post regularly, answer questions and get better at photography along the way too!
